FASTING GUIDE
Will this be your first time fasting for more than a few hours?
Not to worry... this small guide can help you keep the right focus as we press together in partnership of prayer and petition for breakthrough in our presidential election.
What Fasting is
Fasting is simply a special time of devotion where you enhance your prayer focus by denying yourself food. The key with fasting is to make your prayer time fervent and effective by getting out of your usual routine, personalizing this same truth that Jesus proclaimed during his fast: "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God". Fasting together is also an important part of our partnership as spiritual people. History is full of examples fasting to see people through a time of crisis. (ref).
What Fasting is not
Too often, the focus of fasting is on the lack of food. Fasting is not an exercise in self torture. Sure, your body will complain when it does not get it's usual demands, but your resolve to pray and feed your spirit instead should be your main focus, and most people find that some extended time in prayer will help them get the upper hand on whiny stomach syndrome. The important thing is to keep a right perspective during your fast. If you begin to feel faint or to have a serious lack of energy in meeting the demands of the day, don't be a legalist about it. Take a short food break and resume your prayer focused fast, or adjust your fast to allow for only juices so that you can keep enough energy to function. Fasting is not an opportunity to flex your will power.
One final thought. Some people think that fasting has to be done in secret. Although Jesus warns us not to show off spiritual disciplines, when we fast together, it is good to support one another.
Now we have entered into the time of Vigil for the sake of our country. The lust for power that is driving many into frenzied political ambition and temptation to try to steal the election, must be counteracted by us -- People that see the greater America emerging as we recognize the standard that has made our country great.
