Your Act of Vigilance (aka AOV)
The words Vigil and Vigilance each have distinct meanings, but come from the same root word which means "to watch".

Now that doesn't mean watching TV and absorbing all the bad news into your system, but rather to be on watch, as one securing the perimeter of his house to keep out intruders. It is about alertness and devotion.

What we are asking each member to do from Wednesday(29th) through Tuesday(4th) is to exert great devotion and alertness during these crucial days. I am sure each of you possess a great vigilance of character to even be here, ready to stand up and be counted.

Now, since we are conducting a joint vigil with as broad appeal as possible, it is important that to succeed together we must not only coordinate our efforts, but also accomodate the various ways each member prefers to express devotion and awareness. To accomplish this, we each register our own Act of Vigilance(AOV) that we are committing to over the five days. It is important that you write it down and keep yourself on track, as there will always be plenty of excuses ready to carry you away. Please remember however, that you can opt to not have your AOV be visible to other members. We respect the fact that for many, the expression of devotion is a very private matter, so the site is arranged so that you can keep your notes private to yourself, while being counted as an individual standing with other Americans against fraud, voter intimidation and the legal manipulation of the electoral process.

To help you consider your options of action for the Vigil, I have put together a list of suggestions of how your AOV might be constructed. Each suggestion below is based on the premises that: a) We should maximize our efforts in devotion regarding these days by our willingness to sacrifice usual comforts; and b) We must be flexible as we weigh the demands of everyday life in with our mutual effort. All members are encouraged to add their own suggestions to this list as well, using the comment forms provided on their profile page.

  • Spend 10 minutes each day in prayer regarding a recent headline that cites a violation of election civility.
    • 10 minutes may be a starting place, a minimum, or a stict guideline.
    • You may find great contributions from members on this site that will help you know how to pray and meditate.
    • Some may just need to add a few moments extra into their already busy devotional life, but with the awareness that together we are in agreement for civility.
  • Abstain from all solid foods for one or more days. (Fasting Guide)
    • Some would call this a hunger strike.
    • Others would call it prayer and fasting, accompanying the time with much prayer for the nation.
    • For many, abstaining from certian kinds of food for this time is the right choice.
    • Hey, in case you think it is only for Christians... Gandhi did it. So can you. :-)
  • Spend daily time sending out letters, emails and calls for change and civility to our political leaders.
    • Although a Vigil is traditionally a devotional affair, a bit of well reflected civil activism to remind those in power of our efforts is a great way to be watchful, devoted, and aware.
  • Gather your friends together for an evening event to pray for this election.
    • Many people will be discovering this site right in the middle of the 7 days because your efforts are well placed in bringing more people together for one night vigils on election eve.

No matter how you word your AOV, the important thing is to make it personal. Make it a personal journal entry that you may let others also see and imitate.

Please join with us in this very important and timely effort to make a big difference FOR America.
